  • Why did you create this work?
Words such as ‘environment’ and ‘ecology’, are often abstract terms for a small child. So I wanted to visualise the environment as a living, breathing entity that children could easily relate to. I pitched the concept to my publishers who loved the idea and so the project began. I decided to make a picture book depicting the environment as a vast wild creature.
  • How were your illustrations used?
The illustrations form a 32 pages fully illustrated picture book for children of all ages. It can be read as a bedtime story, it can also be used at schools as part of a discussion about protecting our planet and it can also be used as inspiration for a nature art project. The book has already been translated into several languages, as the subject matter has a universal appeal.
  • What materials and techniques did you use?
I began with various pencil sketches of the wild creature symbolising ‘nature’. I painted many textures and palettes based on my research of the natural world, which I then scanned digitally and formed collages to create the landscape. It includes traditional techniques with digital collage.
