He - Why did you create this work?
Whilst sketching at a Forest School, I was overwhelmed by the complexity and scale of the woods around me. Reminded of Shephard’s Hundred Acre Wood map I set out to emulate his work. But stifled by paper formats, I wondered how to create a map that would capture and communicate the small places, while also engaging the bigness of the woods, and in a way that children (aged 4-11) could participate. - How were your illustrations used?
Laser-engraved plywood location markers are hung with steel caribiners and canvas webbing straps around forest school. Children hunt for markers with which to build a map, by clipping them to netted tarpaulin. Paths are woven with recycled rope and new places drawn on chalkboard. Markers are returned to the woods and the map suspended between trees. Children add new findings to the map over time. - What materials and techniques did you use?
Ink linework digitised for laser engraving of plywood markers (painted with black acrylic, sanded, oiled and varnished). Polyethelyne netting stitched to plastic tarpaulin, with acrylic screenprint of map of woods. Steel carabiners and canvas webbing for fixing, recycled ropes for mapping paths. - Was this project commissioned?
