She/Her - Why did you create this work?
“I am Katy” playfully explores a child’s reluctance to be labeled and put inside a box. Katy is absorbed in her own project – and most importantly in just being herself – but unfortunately from the outside it’s all too easy for this to be interpreted differently! There is humour as well as frustration in this common type of misunderstanding between adult and child. I hope readers will find either or both viewpoints relatable! The story was inspired by a conversation with a friend’s daughter. - How were your illustrations used?
This was a self-initiated project that I would love to try and get published!

Rafaela is at the very beginning of her picture book career. She worked as an architect before the birth of her daughter in 2023. After winning one of the Picture Hooks competitions she decided to have a serious go at writing a book whilst on maternity leave and was given a six month mentorship with Morag Hood as part of the Picture Hooks Buddy Scheme 2024. She lives in Edinburgh.
