  • Why did you create this work?
"Through the Dust" is a biographical picture book I created for my university graduation project. It tells the true story of my grandmother, Lola, who grew up in the impoverished Southern United States in the early 20th century. Born to a poor sharecropper family in Oklahoma, Lola became a single mother of three, moving often and overcoming many obstacles to provide a better life for her family.
  • How were your illustrations used?
The illustrations are the visual storytelling element of a picture book about my grandmother’s early life. Each one complements the narrative, highlighting the emotional and historical aspects of her journey with her children. They capture both the vastness of the American landscape and the profound loneliness of the American spirit.
  • What materials and techniques did you use?
All illustrations were hand-drawn using mixed media: watercolors, colored pencils, graphite pencil, and ink.
  • Was this project commissioned?
    Un-commissioned
