- Why did you create this work?
Can we talk more openly about death and dying? How do we deal with pain, and how can we support each other in grief? Schwellenangst offers a new approach to this often-taboo topic. Although death is a fundamental experience, we have pushed it out of everyday life—dying often happens alone, and grief isolates us. We explore biological processes, bureaucratic hurdles, grief beyond models, and social inequalities. Engaging with death provides orientation and shifts our perspective. - How were your illustrations used?
The illustrations in the book function as a second layer, creating visual spaces where cognition reaches its limits. They do not simply accompany the text but expand its meaning, offering a new perspective beyond words. Where concepts become abstract or emotions overwhelming, the images step in—opening doorways, sparking intuition, and allowing a deeper, more nuanced engagement with the subject. - What materials and techniques did you use?
We illustrate together on a single sheet, layering and painting over each other’s work in turns. Starting with analog elements—drawings, textures, and marks—we build a dynamic composition.
