She/her - Why did you create this work?
As an activist, scientist & artist - accurate science x illustration has the ability to transcend language barriers, education levels, age gaps, cut through scientific-jargon, and democratise & disseminate fresh key information. Science is 'gatekeep-y' - but our environmental issues need to be understood easily by everyone en masse in order for activism & action to be taken! As I am both a scientist & an artist: informing the world with accuracy not only key, but my passion. - How were your illustrations used?
My illustration piece was commissioned by the antarctic and southern ocean coalition, to surmise their new paper, timed right before a key shipping delegation where the piece had the opportunity to educate & inform both delegates & public into making an educated vote. We are all citizen scientists. We don't need to a degree to understand the effects we have on our environment. - What materials and techniques did you use?

Josephine Vermilye is a Swiss illustrator working in Ocean Conservation. After living in Hawaii for 4 years, she is now undertaking an MA in Illustration at Camberwell in london! Josephine's tropical colourful art maintains the flavour and passion Josephine has for the ocean and the islands. She makes illustrated infographics that translate key but complex scientific papers to be accessible to any reading level. Her art activism was awarded by the Royal Society for her work creativity x science. - Where are you currently based?
