  • Why did you create this work?
I was asked to create a drawing with text portraying Salwa Duaibis, a Palestinian citizen of Israel and co-founder of Military Court Watch, which monitors the treatment of Palestinian kids in Israeli military detention. My son and I met Salwa in a London café on 28/07/2023, a few weeks before Hamas attacked Israel. Salwa told us about her work in Israel and in the occupied Palestinian territories.
  • How were your illustrations used?
This piece, along with the work of other artists around the issue of Palestinian kids in military detention, was supposed to be exhibited in the USA and Israel in November 2023. In light of the events of 7 October, the project was paused. In August 2024, I learned that Salwa passed away in Jerusalem at the age of 63. The Italian weekly 'Internazionale' published this drawing in November 2024.
  • What materials and techniques did you use?
Line drawings were done with pencil on A2 sketch paper using reference photos I took on location. I scanned the drawings and placed them into my layout programme where I also coloured them. Text is written with a digital version of my hand writing and is based on an interview I conducted with Salwa.
