WIA The AOI Di
2024 | Longlist + Shortlist | Editorial

Why did you choose to enter this work?
Over the last 30 years or so there's been big changes in how and where illustration is used, if at all. I wanted to enter work which reflected the classic days of DP magazine spreads.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
As I'm also a graphic designer I've enjoyed lifting illustration work out of my sketchbook and combining text and image in mocked up page layouts, just for my own pleasure.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
Nice to be recognised and appreciated.

Where do you usually work?
Home office/studio with desk, Mac, scanner, printer etc and traditional drawing board, not a lot of space but it's home!

How long did it take to complete your project?
Can't really say exactly, a few hours in the sketchbook, lifting bits out and reworking them in Photoshop and then dropping them into a DP page layout in Indesign.

What is your dream commission?
Basically anything where the art director understands where I'm coming from and trusts me just to do my own thing. Have done a few nice ones in the past, posters for the NRM and covers for Punch etc.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Having a laugh with it and coming up with amusing and enjoyable solutions to problems.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Keep drawing!

What are your plans for the future?
More self generated stuff, exploring ink and line, caricature and page layouts. Recently got the easel out and started working on canvas again after many years, which has proved enjoyable.
