she - Why did you create this work?
We were commissioned by Laurence King to create an encyclopedia of dinosaurs picture book. We worked with a children's non fiction author and a paleo fact checker for the text. We wanted to create a colourful, fun and engaging dinosaur book that would excite ALL children with super bright and wild illustrations – as vivid as possible. We wanted to try and represent dinosaurs in a new fun way! - How were your illustrations used?
We created all the illustrations for the book by hand. The illustrations were created alongside the text and then the finished book was printed in hardback and in a number of languages. - What materials and techniques did you use?
The artworks were drawn first in pencil on heavy weight paper and then painted in ink and gouache with some water colour. The pages were then scanned high res and with some editing using photoshop but only minor tweaks. We used ink mixed with white gouache for vivid brights and chalky neutrals. - Was this project commissioned?

Becky Bolton and Louise Chappell have been working together as Good Wives and Warriors since graduating from the Glasgow School of Art in 2007. They have a drawing and painting based practice, making both large scale murals and creating intricate and colourful illustrations mostly for publishing and packaging design – clients include Penguin, The Guardian, The Barbican, Adidas and Absolut. - Where are you currently based?
