  • Why did you create this work?
I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Pseudomyxoma Peritonei at aged 32 and underwent extensive surgery to remove 8 organs. I visually recorded each day of my hospital stay, along with handwritten notes, to convey the medical processes I underwent, how it felt (physically and emotionally) and to capture moments and conversations that often go unseen and kept behind closed doors.
  • How were your illustrations used?
I have shared this diary with my specialist oncology team and other health care professionals, and it has since been shown at conferences and used as an educational tool to understand and improve the patient experience. It has also been featured on the BBC Lifeline appeal for Shine Cancer Support (a charity for young adults with cancer) and shared at the Maggie's Centre.
  • What materials and techniques did you use?
I used graphite pencil, acrylic marker pens and colouring pencil. I limited the use of colour on each page to create a clinical hospital feel and depict the blue scrubs, curtains and patterned gowns that are used. I also used graphite pencil to create texture and add atmosphere to each scene.
