- Why did you create this work?
The book is about a young Irishman in 1980s London. Tragic events lead to football hooliganism & addiction, with guilt and ties to rural Ireland always on his mind. I was asked to show the protagonist, convey a sense of sadness & poetry and connect the two disparate locations. It also had to be wraparound and adjustable, to fit different editions’ spine widths. I chose colours that felt a little vintage, and worked for both night & day, cold & urban and warm & rural.
- How were your illustrations used?
The wraparound design features on the latest edition of Ripples on the Lake by Mel O’Dea, published in Ireland by The Forest Press.
- What materials and techniques did you use?
This is a ‘digital linocut’, created in Procreate to replicate my traditional linocuts. I used the eraser tool to ‘carve’ away areas of colour, adding scanned print textures to give the feel of a traditional print. - Was this project commissioned?
